Joysticky Clicky (No more touchscreen support)
I've spent too much time trying to make touchscreen controls work. I'm pulling them out entirely (for now) and developing strictly for desktop. Nothing about mobile gaming interests me and I doubt many of the old farts who love old school shoot 'em ups enjoy swiping their thumbs around a screen like a toddler. I'll probably make a separate version specifically for phones later down the road, but it will exist solely to promote this one. 4:3 games look like crap on a phone, anyway, so this theoretical separate version will be made 9:16.
So here's the initialization screen, ensuring the player (hey, that's you!) clicks on the game to focus it before it calls for audio. Otherwise, it was possible to start the game before the audio engine had properly initialized (modern browsers require user interaction before an object can play sound). I've seen a lot of games on Itch fail to do this, even featured games, but first impressions matter and if someone is wondering where the hell the music is, it can take 'em out of the game.
Now there's a minor splash animation for bullet hits. Even though it's a placeholder, this required a lot more adjustments than I expected because it initially covered the boss's face, rendering the startup animation for her mouth attack unreadable. In fact, it's still unsatisfactory so I may rethink the whole thing.
The player's bullets take more interesting paths now, which is all part of the plan to make this look just a little less amateurish. The starting pair of bullets cross each other, the second pair of bullets (POW#1) bend away from each other, and the final pair (POW#2) just shoot straight. Ideally, the bullets will eventually become a bit more like Cho Ren Sha's, but at the moment I'm just happy they're all not shooting in a boring straight line anymore. I'm especially happy because it's only one sprite!
The exciting bit of today's update: the onscreen shot limit is in. It's made certain aspects of the game much easier if you know how to fight close quarters, so expect a lot of tweaks in the future. I literally just finished it a few minutes ago and, as usual, I'm hours past my bedtime, so there hasn't been time for testing it at all.
